ASHVIN at Transport Research Board Annual Meeting 2024 in Washington D.C, U.S

ASHVIN’s Innovation continues to be shared on the other side of the Atlantic

From the 7th to the 11th of January, 2024, our partner, Infraplan Consulting, joined a major American event, Transport Reasearch Board (TRB) Annual Meeting 2024, hosted in Washington D.C, the United States. The TRB operates as a part of the National Academy of Science, Engineering and Medicine, and it mobilizes expertise, experience, and knowledge to anticipate and solve complex transportation-related challenges.

Thousands of transportation administrators, practitioners, policy makers, and researchers participated in more than 600 workshops, lecture sessions, committee sessions, and poster sessions. Also there were more than 200 exhibitors who joined this event.

ASHVIN’s research entitled “Digitally Twinned Risk-Based Asset Management for Airport Infrastructure” was presented by dr Emir Ganić at the session dedicated to “Hot Topics in Aviation Resilience and Emergency Management”, on the 8th of January, 2024. The authors of this research are Irina Stipanovic (Infra Plan Consulting), Sandra Skaric Palic (Infra Plan Consulting), Emir Ganić (University of Belgrade/Infra Plan Consulting) and Mohannad Darwish (Technische Universität Berlin). During the presentation, two developed tools, GISI and RISA, which enable establishment of a risk-based predictive maintenance planning, with KPI dashboard and a GIS integrator for digital twin-based asset management for spatially distributed assets were presented to more than 30 participants who joined the session.

Abstract

A relatively recent concept in the area of operational and maintenance management is digitalization through the creation of digital twins of different types of infrastructure. A comprehensive strategy for the enhancement of life cycle management of transportation infrastructure is provided by digital twin technology. The paper describes the two developed interdependent tools, GISI and RISA which enable establishment of a risk-based predictive maintenance planning, with KPI dashboard and a GIS integrator for digital twin-based asset management for spatially distributed assets. It depicts the development of the system and also describes the implementation of the GIS integrator on an exemplary airport runway structure. A specific tool GISI is developed to integrate all of the data related to monitoring, condition assessment and maintenance of infrastructure into GIS for asset management on all levels, from short to long term decision making. RISA tool is developed to predict different maintenance scenarios based on the inspection and monitoring of assets. The tool allows end-users to interactively review and utilize specific outputs of the risk assessment and the consequence modelling in risk analysis. The tool presents the user with different maintenance strategies that could be chosen based on KPIs.
